Overcoming the Fear of Witnessing

Many believers get a knot in their stomach the moment witnessing crosses their mind.

This simple evangelism training in Branson page is designed to help you trade those butterflies for the confidence to start a sincere conversation—even when your palms are sweating.

If you feel like evangelism is only for “bold” people or “super Christians,” I want to show you a simpler, more biblical way.

Learning evangelism is a lot like riding a bike. It feels a little wobbly and scary at the start, but once you find your balance, it becomes a natural part of your journey.

Remember learning to drive? The first time behind the wheel felt terrifying, but now you do it without thinking.

Great news: God isn't holding auditions for smooth talkers. He's looking for people who care enough to try. God is looking for you to share His Good News with others.

I’ll start this simple evangelism training by showing you a few steps you can use in real conversations, and then I’ll share a real-life story so you can see this isn’t just theory.

The Simple Biblical Pattern for Evangelism

Evangelism isn’t a showdown — it’s a simple, courageous conversation.

It's a roadmap that keeps the Gospel clear when your nerves try to derail you.

Step 1: Start Conversations With Questions

Questions help because they are friendly and open the door to real conversation. They reply and you listen to what they say.

We listen not to be polite, but to be loving. We listen not to gather information, but to understand hearts. And we listen so the words we share are not generic, but personal — just like the gospel itself.

Questions help because they are friendly and open the door to real conversation. They also help you listen instead of just “talking at” someone.

“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” — James 1:19 (NLT, emphasis added)

“Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.” — Proverbs 20:5 (NLT, emphasis added)

Sincere Gospel Conversation Starters to Break the Ice

  • Do you have any spiritual beliefs?
  • Do you think there is an afterlife?
  • What do you think happens after someone dies?
  • Do you have a Christian (or religious) background?

If the person is open, keep going. If they are not interested, be polite and move on. You are not trying to force anything.

You are looking for an open door that the Lord has provided for you. If this one is closed, move on to the next person.

Step 2: Use God’s Law to Show the Need

You might think about God’s judgment the way many people do. You may say, “I’m a good person”. I’m better than most, so I’ll be okay when I stand before God.

It's easy to act like God “grades on a curve” by comparing us to people who seem worse.

The problem is that God doesn't judge us by comparing us to anyone else. His standard isn't “better than someone else.” God's standard is holiness. This means perfect goodness with no sin at all.

When we look at that perfect standard, we see that every one of us falls short. We don't need a curve; we need God’s mercy.

To a person who thinks they are healthy, a doctor is just a lifestyle choice. But to a person who knows they are dying, a doctor is their only hope.

This is where God’s Law helps. When you learn how to use the Ten Commandments in evangelism, the cross finally makes sense to the person you are talking to.

When a person doesn't understand sin, Jesus can sound like a moral self-help program instead of a Savior.

“They demonstrate that God’s Law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.”Romans 2:15 (NLT, emphasis added)

Well then, am I suggesting that the Law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the Law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, “You must not covet.”Romans 7:7 (NLT, emphasis added)

Here are some questions you can ask a person using the Ten Commandments to show them how God sees their sin:

  • Have you ever told a lie? (Exodus 20:16)
  • Have you ever stolen anything? (Exodus 20:15)
  • Have you used God’s name in vain — as a curse word or with disrespect? (Exodus 20:7)

You can look at the Ten Commandments and figure out which ones you would like to ask someone. (Exodus 20:3-17)

You don't need to sound harsh. You can be calm and respectful. You can even mention that you have been guilty of breaking these at some point in your life.

The goal of simple evangelism training is not to shame someone. The goal is to tell the truth with love and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting and work on their heart.

Step 3: Share the Gospel Clearly

Following a biblical pattern for evangelism ensures that we don't just share our opinion, but we share the honest truth of God's Word.

God is holy. God is completely pure. Just as a tiny drop of ink ruins a glass of water, a single sin cannot exist in His presence. Because God is holy — He cannot simply overlook sin.

“Who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy.”Revelation 15:4a (NLT, emphasis added)

We have all sinned.

The truth is that every one of us has a “sin problem.” As mentioned earlier, we would like to compare ourselves to others to feel better, but God doesn't grade on a curve.

He uses His own perfect goodness as the measure. We do not meet his standard.

Think of it like an Olympic long jump. I may jump 5 feet, and you may jump 20 feet, but if the goal is to jump across the Atlantic Ocean, both of us have fallen short.

In the same way, while some people might seem “better” than others, none of us can reach God's standard of holiness on our own.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”Romans 3:23 (NLT, emphasis added)

“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.”1 John 1:8 (NLT, emphasis added)

Jesus died for sinners and rose again.

Imagine you are in court with a pile of fines that you can’t afford to pay...

The judge is fair, so he can’t just let you go. But all of a sudden, the judge steps down from his seat on the platform, comes around and pulls out his wallet, and pays every penny of your fine.

This is exactly what Jesus did for us:

We broke God's Law, but Jesus paid our “fine” when he died on the cross. He took the punishment that we deserved so we could be forgiven.

But Jesus didn't stay dead! He rose from the dead and proved that He has the power to give us eternal life in heaven.

He is the only one who can bridge the gap between our sin and God’s holiness.

"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." — Romans 5:8 (NLT, emphasis added)

God commands everyone to repent and trust in Christ.

Sometimes God’s Word gets watered down by well-meaning Christians when it comes to repentance. God doesn't just “suggest” that we come to Him; He commands us to repent and trust.

Think of repentance like turning about-face. It means you stop heading your own way, realize that you have sinned against God, it is wrong, and turning toward God.

It’s a change of heart that leads to a change in our direction.

Trust (or faith) is more than just knowing facts about Jesus. It’s like sitting down in a chair. You can look at a chair and believe it exists, but you aren't "trusting" it until you put your full weight on it.

To be saved, you must put the full weight of your life on what Jesus did for you on the Cross, trusting Him alone to save you.

"God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him."Acts 17:30 (NLT, emphasis added)

"The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!"Mark 1:15 (NLT, emphasis added)

Step 4: Invite a Response (Without Pressure)

If you feel led by the Holy Spirit, you can invite someone to respond to the Gospel without pressuring them. Here are a few respectful ways:

  • Does that make sense?
  • Have you ever repented and trusted Christ?
  • Would you like to do this now?

Your job is not to force someone to make a decision. You are not a salesman trying to “make the sell”.

You are a messenger of God, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Your job is to be faithful, clear, and kind. If you did this, you are successful in God’s eyes.

What they do with the knowledge you gave them is up to them.

Street Witnessing Basics: Gospel Tracts, Teams, and Courage

Stepping out to share your faith through this simple evangelism training requires both courage and a sincere love for the lost. It can be done; it just takes a bit of practice

Here are a few simple reminders to help you share without being weird or pushy — and still honor Jesus.

Street witnessing can sound scary until you try it.

Here are a few street witnessing tips to help you get started:

  • Smile and be polite: Most people are simply busy, not necessarily angry. A warm smile and a kind "Hello" can go a long way in starting a gospel conversation.
  • Watch your body language: Stand in a way that doesn't block someone’s path. Being respectful of their personal space shows that you value them as a person.
  • Leave the door open: If someone says no, just say, "No problem! Have a great day." You want to leave them with a positive impression of Christians.

Gospel tracts can also help because:

  • They provide a message for people to read later.
  • They act as great gospel conversation starters.
  • They help you stay focused on the simple evangelism training method you are using.

Also, if you go out with other believers, it helps a lot. Being part of an outreach team will give you courage, support, and chances to learn from each other. Even if it's only one other person.

If you want to grow in this area, ask your pastor or a few friends if they want to meet once a month to pray, hand out tracts, and have meaningful spiritual conversations with people in the area.

What You Can Do Today (A Practical Evangelism Plan)

Here is a simple evangelism training plan that you can do today, even if you feel nervous.

1) Pray for courage and compassion.

Ask God to help you love people. If you care more for the other person than you do your feelings, you are more likely to be bold and reach them.

2) Carry at least one gospel tract with you to hand out. As mentioned before, they are a real ice-breaker and help you start a conversation.

If you don't have tracts, write a note with:

  • A short gospel summary
  • Your name
  • A way to contact you or your church

3) Start one conversation.

Pick one person today: a cashier, neighbor, coworker, or friend.

Smile. Be friendly. Ask one question. Listen.

4) Share one clear sentence about the Gospel.

Example:

  • I’ve learned that God loves us, but our sin separates us from Him, and Jesus came to fix that for us.
  • I believe Jesus died for our sins and rose again so we could be forgiven and have a real relationship with God.
  • Christianity is about trusting what Jesus did for us, not trying to be a good enough person for God.
  • The good news is that God offers forgiveness and new life through Jesus to anyone who turns to Him and believes.
  • I follow Jesus because He forgave my sin, changed my life, and gave me peace with God.

Decide on what Gospel one-liner you would like to say, pray that God gives you the boldness, and then just say it.

5) Offer a Way to Keep Seeking

Try not to let the conversation just "drop." Give the person a sincere way to keep exploring the truth at their own pace. Think of this as a bridge to their next encounter with God.

You can say:

  • The Resource Step: "May I give you this booklet? It explains what we talked about and has some great verses to read when you have time."

  • The Relationship Step: "I've really enjoyed our talk. I’d love to grab a coffee sometime to hear more of your story. Would you be open to that?"

  • The Scripture Step: "If you have a Bible at home, would you be willing to read the first few chapters of the Gospel of John this week? It's a great place to see who Jesus really is."

By following these five steps, you have actively engaged in simple evangelism training. This is a vital act of obedience that honors the Lord.

A Simple Call to be Faithful

You don't have to be a great speaker to share God's love. Real evangelism is simply being a faithful messenger and speaking the Gospel.

When you pray for others and speak with a sincere heart, you are doing exactly what Jesus asked you to do.

Don’t wait for the "perfect" time to start. If you did, you'd never get started. The more you practice, the better you will get.

Take one step today. You might think that one conversation is small, but it can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Worldview Weekend: Branson Outreach with Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron

April 29 – May 1, 2005

This was the WorldView Weekend in Branson, Missouri. My wife (Leann, who is also a Great News Network "GNN" Seed Sower in the Branson area) and I attended.

The entire weekend they had preaching about evangelism and reaching the lost.

Kirk Cameron preached a message, "Soundly Saved," and Ray Comfort preached about "Bringing Your Child To Christ."

Ray weaved his messages, "True and False Conversions" and "Hell's Best Kept Secret" throughout his talk.

Connecting with Fellow Laborers in the Gospel

This Worldview Weekend was being held at our church, Tri-Lakes Church. My wife and I met with Ray Comfort before he spoke and let him know we are GNN Seed Sowers in the Branson area.

I asked him if he would make an announcement and give out my e-mail address to the people attending, so that any that are interested in going out street witnessing with us in the future can contact me.

He did so when the group of about 150 of us gathered before going out Saturday afternoon for the "School of Evangelism."

At the time, I was waiting and praying for Christians to e-mail me so that we can get a team going in the Branson, Missouri area.

Please pray that the committed ones that are burdened about reaching the lost get in touch with me.

Biblical Examples: The Mall Outreach

It was arranged that Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort "open air" preach at the only enclosed mall in Branson.

Kirk got up and told a little about the Left Behind III movie and talked about his testimony. He began drawing a crowd by asking questions and giving away money. Then he introduced Ray.

Ray gave away more money by asking the people questions. Then he asked if there was anyone who thought they were a good person.

A young man raised his hand and was picked. Ray took him through the Law, the Ten Commandments, to show the man that he has sinned against God.

Putting the Gospel into Practice

After Ray stepped down, those of us attending the "School of Evangelism" started moving among the crowds in the mall, passing out tracts and witnessing to people.

There were probably as many of us attending as were there shopping and watching. I think just about every shopper and person listening to Ray and Kirk were witnessed to.

Later, we heard that people shopping in the mall were saying, "What is going on with all these Christians passing out tracts and talking to everyone?"

Ray and Kirk stayed for a while, talking to people, and signing things.

We took our 10-year-old girl with us (she is planning on being a missionary using the Way of the Master evangelism principles).

She was able to get both Ray and Kirk to sign a Million Dollar Bill Gospel Tract for her.

We had a good time. It was an encouraging time with other believers out sharing our faith, as well as learning firsthand simple evangelism training from Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron.

Your Turn: From Simple Evangelism Training in Branson to Action

This report is a snapshot of what God does best—He uses the guy stuttering through a Good Person Test conversation in a Starbucks and turns it into something eternal. He can use you too.

Whether it was in a mall in 2005 or at a grocery store today, the Biblical Pattern remains the same.

When we use God’s Law to show people their need for a Savior, the message of the Cross becomes the best news they have ever heard.

Take the Next Step

You don't need to be a famous evangelist like Ray Comfort or an actor like Kirk Cameron to be a "Seed Sower." You only need a sincere heart and a willingness to speak the truth in love.

As you finish reading this simple evangelism training in Branson, I encourage you to:

  • Pray: Ask God to give you a burden for the people in your circle of influence.
  • Prepare: Keep a few gospel tracts in your pocket or purse so you are always ready.
  • Practice: Start a conversation with someone this week that may open the door to the Gospel.

A Final Word of Encouragement

It might feel a little awkward, but you’re not alone — God’s already in the conversation, and He loves the person you’re about to talk to.

Just as my wife and I found fellow laborers in Branson, God will provide the strength and the partners you need.

Let’s be excited to reach the lost and stay faithful to the task. We know that when we share God’s Word, it is never a waste of time.

37 “He said to his disciples, The harvest is great, but the workers are few.

38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.Matthew 9:37–38 (NLT, emphasis added)
